Big Daddy Long Legs Bite

This fossil actually looks a lot like the long legged species we see today.
Big daddy long legs bite. After measuring the spider s fangs at approximately 0 25 mm adam savage inserted his hand into a container with several daddy long legs and reported that he felt a bite which produced a mild short. Myth has it that they are the most venomous arachnids on the planet. Sometimes the name daddy longlegs is used for a group of spiders of the family pholcidae. Harvestmen are quickly separated from their legs which seem designed to fall off.
Their body can differ in shape depending on the group they belong to. Adult male long bodied cellar spiders have a body length of about 6 mm. Legs on these spiders have been documented up to 50mm in length. In a large group it creates a much more pronounced effect than individuals would in a collaborative defense against larger predators.
Pholcidae often referred to as cellar spiders as also commonly known as daddy longlegs. Meanwhile the harvestmen has since escaped. On the other hand short bodied cellar spiders have much shorter bodies as their name implies. Hosts jamie hyneman and adam savage first established that the spider s venom was not as toxic as other venoms after being told about an experiment whereby mice were injected with venom from both a daddy long legs and a black widow with the black widow venom producing a much stronger reaction.
They have six legs and wings and look like gigantic mosquitoes. Watch this video to find out more about that. Spiders from this family are fragile and a range in body size from 2 to 10 mm. Once detached the leg can continue to twitch for up to an hour effectively tricking predators into believing they ve hauled in a big catch.
These spiders are commonly called cellar spiders and they do have venom glands. Opiliones or daddy long legs are arachnids but not spiders. True daddy long legs or harvestmen excrete chemicals that put off a distinctly unpleasant odor from special glands in their bodies. Crane flies are not spiders or arachnids and do not pose a threat to people.
It is believed daddy longlegs split off from scorpions which were becoming terrestrial about 435 million years ago.
